Transcription: In 1950, a Japanese inventor at the Imperial University of Tokyo came up with an idea for storing computer information on a disk of plastic with a magnetic coating similar to that of audio tape. This would have the advantage of a much easier access of information than the slow linear tape used previously. Today, floppy disks are common in computer systems with the 3.5 inch mini diskette now more popular than the older less portable 5.25 inch disk. Although the casing of floppy disks is rigid the actual data holding disk inside is indeed wafer thin and floppy.
